YAJ0: Yet Another Java Zero-Day

Through our Malware Protection Cloud (MPC), we detected a brand new Java zero-day vulnerability that was used to attack multiple customers. Specifically, we observed successful exploitation against browsers that have Java v1.6 Update 41 and Java v1.7 Update 15 installed.

Not like other popular Java vulnerabilities in which security manager can be disabled easily, this vulnerability leads to arbitrary memory read and write in JVM process. After triggering the vulnerability, exploit is looking for the memory which holds JVM internal data structure like if security manager is enabled or not, and then overwrites the chunk of memory as zero. Upon successful exploitation, it will download a McRAT executable (MD5: b6c8ede9e2153f2a1e650dfa05b59b99 as svchost.jpg) from same server hosting the JAR file and then execute it.

It’s a Kind of Magic

The Number of the Beast

Yesterday, we sent out a warning regarding the PDF zero-day we found being exploited in the wild. Adobe has released a security advisory with mitigations. Here are more details about the attack.

The JavaScript embedded in the crafted PDF is highly obfuscated using string manipulation techniques. Most of the variables in the JavaScript are in Italian. The JavaScript has version checks for various versions of Adobe Reader as shown below and it creates the appropriate shellcode based on the version found.

In Turn, It’s PDF Time

[Update: February 13, 2013] We have found IE, Java, and Flash zero-days in a row in the past several months, and now it's PDF’s turn. Today, we identified that a PDF zero-day is being exploited in the wild, and we observed successful exploitation on the latest Adobe PDF Reader 9.5.3, 10.1.5, and 11.0.1.

Upon successful exploitation, it will drop two DLLs. The first DLL shows a fake error message and opens a decoy PDF document, which is usually common in targeted attacks. The second DLL in turn drops the callback component, which talks to a remote domain.

LadyBoyle Comes to Town with a New Exploit

[Update: February 12, 2013] By now you have probably heard of the new zero-day exploit in Adobe Flash that was patched today. FireEye Labs identified the exploit in the wild on February 5, 2013, which based on the compile time and document creation time is the same day the malicious payload was generated. Adobe PSIRT has released information about this threat here. They have also released an advisory with details on versions and platforms affected along with applicable patches. The two exploits have been assigned CVE-2013-0633 and CVE-2013-0634. It is highly recommended that you apply this patch right away, as this threat is active in the wild.

An Encounter with Trojan Nap

Operation Beebus

FireEye discovered an APT campaign consistently targeting companies in the aerospace and defense industries. The campaign has been in effect for sometime now.

Infection Vector

We have seen this campaign use both email and drive-by downloads as a means of infecting end users. The threat actor has consistently used attachment names of documents/white papers released by well-known companies. The malicious email attachment exploits some common vulnerabilities in PDF and DOC files.

Hackers Targeting Taiwanese Technology Firm

In the past, hackers have attempted to compromise targeted organizations by sending phishing email directly to their users. However, there seems to be a shift away from this trend in the recent years. Hackers were observed to conduct multi-prong approaches to targeting the organization of interest and their affiliated companies. For example, in July 2011, ESTsoft’s ALZip update server was compromised in an attack on CyWorld and Nate users.1

In one of our investigations, a malicious email was found to be targeting a Taiwanese technology company that deals heavily with the finance services industry (FSI) and the government in Taiwan (see Figure 1 below). To trick the user into opening the malicious document, the attacker made use of an announcement by the Taiwanese Ministry of Finance (see Figure 2).
